Small & Mighty Activity #1

Bug Playgrounds

Here’s an activity that even the big kids at heart can get on board with.

If you ask most kids to design their own playground, we bet they would have some pretty interesting answers. Ziplines, swings, teeter totters, maybe even some climbing structure are just a few ideas we would add in our playground.

Our camp helpers were here this week and we decided to create our own playground for bugs! Yes the local insects are going to have a blast when they get to test out the new natural play equipment we built for them.

What do you need to make your own playground for creepy crawlers???

Well that depends on what you want to make. Owen decided to make a swing and slide set, while Abigail wanted to make a shelter to put a picnic table in. (You may even want to draw a picture of your plan on a piece of paper before you start building.)

We used the following materials:

  • popsicle sticks

  • hot glue (with adult supervision

  • cardboard

  • scissors

  • twine

  • markers

  • sticks, bark, and moss

CAN WE BUILD IT?… YES WE CAN!

We are shrinking ourselves down to pretend we are super tiny, just like the insects and bugs that are all around us that mostly go unnoticed.

If you could be any type of insect, what would you be? Would you have wings? How many legs would you have? What would you eat? Where would you live?

These were all questions we asked ourselves setting up our bug playground and took these into consideration when we built our structures.

Abigail made “The Bug Hangout” for all types of insects to get some much needed shade from the hot sun and they maybe will even have time for a picnic lunch with their family while they’re inside.

Owen’s “Bug Ground” is definitely going to be the place to be for LOTS of insects this summer. Shout out to Brianna (our AMAZING volunteer this year) for helping with this design and helping us with the hot glue!

After we set them outside, we removed our toy bugs and are waiting for real ones to show up.

You’re little ones will WANT to go outside just to inspect the playground for visitors. Grab your magnifying glass to really get a close look. Enjoy!

We thought we would share this from http://learningwithoutdoors.com/. What a great way to document a list of all your critter sightings!
