Solar Ovens
We could hardly wait to make our favourite camping treat….S’MORES!
Since we are going camping this week, we decided to make our s’mores using no electricity and you don’t even need to start a fire to make these. We’re using the sun’s energy to cook our sweet treats!
What you need:
-S’mores ingredients (graham crackers, marshmallows, chocolate squares)
-pizza box
-scissors
-plastic wrap
-tin foil
-tape or glue
-wooden skewers
-black construction paper
-markers (optional for decoration)
How to make solar oven:
Take your pizza box lid and make 3 cuts safely with your scissors (with adult supervision) to make a flap. Do not make a 4th cut at the back of the box (see picture).
2. Next, glue or tape black construction paper to the inside of the pizza box.
3. You can decorate your box at this stage with markers if you’d like.- We skipped this step as we were too excited for the s’mores.
4. Tape a piece of tin foil to the inside of the flap pointing towards the box.
5. Tape a few pieces of plastic wrap covering the hole in the box (this step keeps creepy crawlers from getting to taste your s’mores before you do!)
6. Assemble the s’mores leaving off the top graham cracker.
7. Close the lid and use a skewer to prop the flap up on an angle so the sun can reflect off the tin foil into the box.
8. Wait until the chocolate is melted and then add the graham crackers on top and enjoy!
Pro Tip: Jazz these treats up a little bit by using chocolate chip cookies instead of graham crackers or experiment with different chocolate bars. You could even stuff some crunchy peanuts into your marshmallows. Think of the possibilities!
