Public invited to free advance screening April 29 at Batawa Ski Hill

 Toronto, April 20, 2012 – What can six kids from Batawa accomplish in three days? They can transform the site of a dinosaur fossil at the Batawa Ski Hill into a vibrant dinosaur-themed playground designed for kids, by kids. The park’s revitalization was captured on film as part of Giver, a new TV series co-produced by TVO and Sinking Ship Entertainment that engages kids in their local communities as they volunteer their time to reimagine and rebuild local playgrounds in parks across Ontario.

 The Batawa Development Corporation and the Batawa Ski Hill are pleased to present a screening party for the Batawa episode of Giver on Sunday April 29 at the Batawa Ski Hill. Full details of the event are below. The public is invited to join with the children featured in the episode, community sponsors, and local dignitaries for an exclusive advance screening before the episode premieres on TVO on Tuesday May 1 at 6:30 pm.

 Six local children ages 6 to 12 joined the Giver team to design and build the dinosaur-themed playground. With the help of host Michael Lagimodiere, the kids learned how to safely use a chainsaw to build a dinosaur fort, held a pancake breakfast fundraiser and created a dinosaur footprint hopscotch game. With only three days to finish the project, they felt a great sense of pride in all that they were able to accomplish.

 “My favourite part about Giver is the fact that it’s so fun to do, it’s so fun to volunteer. Giver’s changed me because it’s made me want to volunteer more, made me want to help,” said 12 year-old Giver participant Hayden from Batawa.

 “Giver shows what kids can do when given the chance to make a difference,” said Patricia Ellingson, TVO’s Creative Head of Children’s Media. “This series is about “kid power,” working as a team, civic engagement and the importance of helping to make your community the best it can be. Giver proves that when given the opportunity, kids can and will do amazing things.”

 TVO and Sinking Ship Entertainment worked with the Ontario Parks Association to put a call out to communities across the province in order to select the locations with the greatest need for safe, fun parks. Batawa was one of 13 communities selected from more than 60 submissions from across Ontario.

Bring your own sled and enjoy the downhill fun on Bambi, Meadow and Park. Check in at Guest Services for a lift ticket and hike the hill all day! The Bistro will be serving delicious food and you can still buy your tickets for the Meltdown Hoedown at Guest Services! Please note – no tubes/ skis/ snowboards allowed.
